What was Simon doing with the bandages in Iron Lung?

About a third of the way through the film Iron Lung (2026), Simon (Markiplier) was applying white bandages to some button-like thing on a wall/panel of the submarine. There were quite a lot of them at one point (if I remember correctly), but they kept sliding off.

Simon taping down the button.

It wasn’t clear to me what he was trying to achieve or whether it was working. Please explain what was going on with the bandages and the button-like thing.

For the first forty minutes of the movie, the interior of the submarine was illuminated by several light bulbs, but the engine and lights were knocked out when the sub was attacked by the sea monster, leaving Simon in near-total darkness.

To restore power to the engines, Simon had to open a maintenance hatch in the floor and climb down into a crawlspace to access the Emergency Engine Restart panel. Before entering the crawlspace, he also searched a closet for anything that might be useful. During this part of the movie (around the 45-minute mark), he started turning on the X-ray screen purely to illuminate the otherwise-dark room he was in and better see what he was doing.

When the button that turned on the X-ray screen was pressed, it would automatically unpress itself, causing the screen to turn off after being on for about twelve seconds. Initially, Simon just kept pressing the button again after the screen turned off to get the light back, but that wasn't convenient, so he eventually taped the button down to keep it pressed down (and the screen on) for longer. He found a life jacket with a small flashlight attached to it in the closet, but evidently wasn't content to rely on the light produced by that alone.

After accessing the crawlspace and the Emergency Engine Restart panel, Simon managed to get both the engine and lights back on (around the 51-minute mark). The tape applied over the button had come unstuck and fallen to the floor and the screen had automatically turned off by the time he emerged from the crawlspace, but he didn't bother turning it back on for the next few minutes, as he no longer needed it to illuminate the interior of the sub.

Around the 57-minute mark, he started navigating his way through the cave system he was in to get back to the surface, and repeatedly taped the button down again to more clearly see what was outside the sub. The tape kept coming unstuck again, though, and he eventually ran out of fresh tape to use, at which point he relied more heavily on the other navigational instruments.
